Reviewed for Oʻahu, Hawaiʻi on November 1, 2026. Requirements and listings can change. This is general information, not legal advice; official sources and the housing provider’s current written criteria control.
For a long-term apartment or house on Oʻahu, start with an active Honolulu MLS listing, then verify the named manager before you pay or send documents. Placyn is a free search of those active long-term MLS rentals, plus owner-submitted rooms and guest houses that stay private until review. Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace can contain real posts, and they are also where copied listings show up, so treat them as unverified until you confirm the person and the home. Placyn does not manage properties.
Compare the places people actually use
No single website has every rental on the island. The same home can appear in more than one place. Use the source that matches the home, then match the address, price, and contact so you do not chase a copy.
Honolulu MLS (HiCentral)
HiCentral is the Honolulu Board of REALTORS® multiple listing service. Licensed brokerages and property managers publish listings there. It is the traceable source for most professionally listed long-term rentals, including Honolulu apartments and houses.
Placyn
Placyn’s Oʻahu rental search reads active long-term rentals from that MLS feed and shows the MLS number and the manager to contact. It also publishes owner-listed rooms and guest houses after review, labeled separately. Placyn is not HiCentral, not a property manager, and not a place that accepts applications or deposits.
A property manager’s own website
Useful when you already know the company and want that company’s inventory. It will not show the rest of the island. Confirm you are on the company’s real site before you apply or pay.
Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace
Open classifieds. Some posts are real. Scammers also copy MLS photos, drop the rent, and swap in a new contact. The FTC’s rental-listing scam guidance is the checklist. Placyn’s Oʻahu scam guide applies those steps locally.
National rental sites
Sites such as Zillow or Apartments.com may show some of the same MLS homes plus other ads. A national page is not a Hawaiʻi lease. Match the manager and the unit, and do not assume a lead form on a national site is the official application.
Long-term apartments in Honolulu
For a long-term Honolulu apartment, open Honolulu long-term rentals and narrow by rent, bedrooms, and the town area you actually need, such as Kakaʻako, Waikīkī, or Makiki. Neighborhood guides for Kakaʻako and Waikīkī add local context and a way to browse current MLS listings in that area. An active listing is a lead. The manager confirms availability, parking, fees, and the application path.
Placyn’s market report publishes the current median advertised rent for active Oʻahu MLS listings. That number is a median of asking rents, not an average and not the rent on a signed lease.
What Placyn is, and what a landlord can list
Placyn, LLC operates placyn.com as a rental search now serving Oʻahu. Read About Placyn and Trust and safety for the limits. Placyn does not publish star ratings or third-party endorsements.
Owners can list a room or permitted guest house for free. The draft stays private until review. Placyn does not take a direct listing for a whole house or apartment, does not manage the property, and does not screen tenants or hold the deposit. Whole homes show up in search when a brokerage publishes them on the MLS.
If you are moving with the military
Start with the housing office for your gaining command and with Homes.mil. Those are the official channels. Placyn can help you compare public off-base MLS listings afterward. It is not a Department of Defense site and it does not assign housing or pay allowances. The PCS rental guide covers Schofield, Pearl Harbor, and the checks to make before you sign.
FAQ
Where should I look for a long-term rental on Oʻahu besides Craigslist?
Start with active Honolulu MLS listings, which brokerages and property managers publish through HiCentral. Placyn is a free search of the active long-term rentals in that feed, plus owner-submitted rooms and guest houses. Also check a property manager’s own site when you already know the company. Treat Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace as unverified until you confirm the manager and the home. Placyn does not manage properties.
Is Placyn the same as HiCentral?
No. HiCentral is the Honolulu Board of REALTORS® MLS. Placyn is an independent search of active long-term rental listings from that MLS feed, plus reviewed owner rooms and guest houses. Placyn is not the board, and it does not manage the homes.
Can I find long-term Honolulu apartments on Placyn?
Yes, when a brokerage or property manager has published the apartment as an active long-term MLS rental. Open the Honolulu rental search, then narrow by area, rent, and bedrooms. Confirm the unit, fees, and availability with the manager named on the listing. Some off-MLS apartments will not appear.
Can a landlord list a whole home on Placyn for free?
Placyn’s free owner listing is a room in a shared home or a permitted guest house, submitted for review. Placyn does not take a direct listing for a whole house or apartment and does not manage the property. Whole homes appear when a brokerage publishes them on the Honolulu MLS.
Is Placyn a legitimate Hawaii rental site?
Placyn is an independent rental-search website operated by Placyn, LLC. It shows active Oʻahu MLS rentals and reviewed owner rooms or guest houses, and it sends you to the listing manager or owner. It does not manage properties, accept applications, or screen renters. Read the trust page for the limits.
